Last weekend’s 2017 Mackay Triathlon Festival attracted record numbers. The Festival also formed the 5th race in the Nissan State Series. With race options for everyone aged 7 and older, first timers and experienced athletes, the Festival attracted both local and interstate athletes.
Overall male winner, Matt Hutchinson from Ingham had a 2 minute lead on his closest competitors, Samuel Murphy, and local 18 year old Joshua Bornman. Hutchinson also took out the Julia Creek Dirt’n’Dust triathlon earlier this year.
The women’s race went to Wilston Grange’s Jacqueline Thistleton, ahead of Cairns Croc’s Megan Hendry and Mackay’s Alyce Garth.
This year’s Festival also included a junior development workshop run by local coaches. With a focus on swim and bike skills, over 20 local young athletes had the opportunity to hone their skills for the kids race on Saturday afternoon.
